Care Quilts & Prayer Shawls Bring Comfort to Patients & Families at VJH

Providing comfort and solace to those in sorrow and distress can come in many different forms. For Reverend Grace Wulff, In-house Chaplain at VJH, one of those ways is with prayer shawls and comfort quilts.

“When you wrap a prayer shawl around someone who is experiencing difficult circumstances, it is a reminder that they are cared for and loved, and reminded that God cares for them,” said Rev. Grace.

Crafted with care by members from Silver Star Quilters Association, and local groups from Emmanuel Baptist, Peace Lutheran, Vernon Alliance, and Knox Presbyterian, the quilts and shawls are gifted to VJH patients and their loved ones.

“So many groups have stepped up to help. People look for places to be involved in the community, so we are happy to provide this as a way for members of the community to give back,” said Rev. Grace.

A steady supply of quilts is available for kids at VJH who need extra TLC or new parents who have limited resources. Knitted and crocheted prayer shawls are available for both children and adults.

“One lady just fell in love with her prayer shawl,” said Rev. Grace. “It brought her so much comfort, she wouldn’t be apart from it and wore it until the day she passed away.”Reverend Grace recalled a time she presided over a grave side service of a young mother. “It was a cold, sad day. I wrapped family members in quilts and they all got to take them home. It was a lot to give out that day, but it was so important.“I couldn’t do that without the generous gifts from the community. It feels wonderful to be able to do this. I could never make these on my own, but I get the privilege of handing them out.”
