Virtual Radiothon Raises $50,400 in 12-hours

The format for the 17th Annual Sun FM Have a Heart Radiothon was different, but not the support from our community. Yesterday the Sun FM team broadcast live from the studio to raise funds for Women’s and Children’s Health Services at VJH and our North Okanagan residents once again responded to the call for donations.In just 12-hours $50,400 was raised for the purchase of equipment essential for the critical care of patients in the Women’s and Children’s Department, and donations are still being accepted online and arriving in the mail.“I am constantly in awe of how our community comes together to support our hospital. From the early challengers and donors who set the tone, to callers phoning throughout the day, your generosity will have an impact for years to come. A special thank you must also go to Bell Media and the entire Sun FM team for their creativity and courage in trying something new. This year’s virtual event was outstanding,” stated Kate McBrearty, VJH Foundation Executive Director.Betty Selin, Sun FM morning show co-host said: “Heading into the 17th Annual Have a Heart Radiothon I really didn't know what to expect because in the past so many donations were made in person, but once again the North Okanagan proved how important Vernon Jubilee Hospital is. Thanks to everyone who shared their story, challenged and donated to make this Radiothon so memorable.”Valley First Credit Union, who continued their history of manning the phone lines, helped kick off the day with a pre-event commitment of $1,000. However, when Branch Manager Zachary Palmer took to the airwaves to announce their donation, he surprised everyone by increasing their donation to an incredible $5,000.Emotional stories were shared by doctors, staff members and families who have been touched by the care they received at the hospital. Brittany Wright, mom to newborn son Camden, explained why her family supported the Radiothon this year. “The care and compassion that we received in our time spent with our premature son at VJH was beyond exceptional. From the nursing staff to the pediatricians, to the cleaners and food service staff, everyone went above and beyond to help us through a very emotional time. We are forever grateful.”“Start to finish I was blown away by how the community threw COVID aside for one beautiful day of bonding with our hospital and the heroes that work there every day. Yes! Thank you!” exclaimed Sun FM Morning Show Host/Assistant Program Director Jerhett Schafer.
